Below are seven examples of Wordles using Tom Averill's themes in his book "What Kansas Means to Me." Some people report having trouble seeing these Wordles.
Instructions for Wordle activity.
- Print out several of the Wordles above.
- Set people down at the public access computers. People can do this individually or in groups.
- Show people the printed out Wordles so they know what a Wordle is.
- Tell them to go to http://www.wordle.net/
- Tell them to click "Create your own".
- Ask them to type in the box: What~Kansas~Means~to~Me (or Us). Type it twice on separate lines. The tildes between the words will displays those words as a phrase. (Putting the phrase in quotes did not work for me.) Typing it two times makes the phrase larger so it stands out in the Wordle.
- Now they are ready to add words expressing what Kansas means to them. Each word should be on its own line. Remember to put tildes between the words of phrases. I recommend adding at least 15 words.
- I recommend asking each person or group at a computer to shoot out the words they are typing in so others can add those words if they want.
- Then ask the group to start shooting out words of what Kansas means to them. We are asking them to shoot out the words so everyone can type those words if they want. Each person or group should type in what they want. But, in my opinion, each group should be allowed make a list that is special to them.
- After they have typed in their words, tell them to press the "Go" button immediately below the box, not the submit buttons further down the page. This will show the Wordle.
- Ask them to play with Wordle using the "Font", "Layout" and "Color" menus just above the Wordle and the "Randomize" button below the Wordle.
- When they get the Wordle the way they want it.
- Tell them to click the Save to Public Gallery. (I am telling them to save it before printing because if they save it, then clicking the back button returns to their original list and they can change it. If they don't save it, then clicking the back button takes them back to the "Create your own" page and the words they typed in are lost.)
- After they save it tell them to print two copies: one for them to take home and one to hang up in the library.
